Myeongdong is known for having many popular gourmet restaurants and cafes and today we want to introduce you to Cafe Coin, which has been loved by a wide range of Koreans for the past thirty years. There are two branches of this cafe in Myeongdong and both are filled with it's own history and tradition! Today we are going to introduce branch 1, but you can click here for details on branch 2.

Our Visit 

Opened in 1993, Cafe Coin has preserved the culture and traditions of Myeongdong. 

Although from the outside it is hard to tell, this space leads to a three story space with a terrace and a smoking room. 

After you enter through the big door and climb the stairs, you will find this cute entrance. From the next entrance alone you can tell that Cafe Coin will sport a warm and antique interior. 

You can also see a wall that holds all the signatures from the countless celebrities that have visited the shop. Cafe coin is has also been used as a filming location for various movies and dramas so it is a popular spot for fans to come visit as well. 

Unlike other cafes, you order right from your seat here. Once you have finished your drinks and dessert, you can bring your voucher to the counter to pay before you leave! 

The inside of the cafe is quiet spacious and there are many nice seats so it may be difficult for some to choose a place to sit! 

When the sun sets, the atmosphere changes and the space becomes even more calm and antique. The shop is usually open until 23:00 so you can enjoy the environment and aesthetics until the late hours of the evening. ( At the moment the cafe is only open until 21:00 to cooperate with government regulations regarding Covid-19)

The first and second floors have been designed in a manner where they are quite airy, creating a comfortable and spacious environment. The second floor is mainly sofa seatings so you can opt for seating there for a more relaxing manner. 

The soft lighting really adds to the ambiance of the place, right? 

This rather hidden staircase leads to the third floor! You have to keep an eye out or you might miss it! 

When you get to the third floor you will see a private room like this. This is the smoking room. Currently in Korea, very few cafes have a smoking room like this.

When you go out to the terrace connected to the third floor, there are chairs and ashtrays available so smokers can relax. This seems to be one of the reasons they have been loved for many years.

Not only is the space beautiful, but the desserts and drinks are also pleasent to the eye!

The menu is very diverse and ranges from drip coffee, espresso, black tea, traditional Korean tea, fruit juice and many desserts. 

This Coin Blend Coffee (6,000 won) is the cafe's specialty menu and is made by processing and grinding fresh coffee beans and then extracting in a manual drip extraction method.

The coffee has a deep flavor and we suggest it for those that like to drink their coffee strong! 

This item is the Vienna Coffee (7,000 won) and is topped with a wonderful layer of foamy and delicious cream. The cream is topped with a beautiful cinnamon adding a delicious flavor to the drink.

Along with the coffee we also got a strawberry waffle (19,000 won). This is a seasonal item so it is only available during a limited time, however there are other types of waffles such as traditional waffles and cream waffles that you can try!  

We also wanted to try out the Green Tea Bingsu, (12,000 won) which is shaved ice in Korean! They offer bingsu in a variety of flavors such as red bean, green tea, milk, and strawberry. Bingsu is a famous Korean dessert so if you want to try something unique to Korea we suggest the bingsu! Cafe Coin is most famous for their green tea flavor as they make the ice cream in house!

In addition to the bingsu, we got the tiramisu (8,000 won) to try out as well. This is a dessert that is only sold at this branch so remember to try it when you are here!

Cafe Coin was also the filming location of the popular drama "Reply 1994" and "My Brilliant Life" which starred Kang Dong Won and Song Hye Kyo. 

How to Get There 

Once you come out of Exit 6 of Myeongdong Station, turn left. 

Go straight towards the main road of Myeongdong. 

Take a left when you see Banila Co.

Keep walking until you see Onitsuka Tiger and then turn right and go straight into the alley.

When you see this small sign, you can will see Cafe Coin on the left side.
