This cafe has been all over social media in the past year or so. Locals and travellers from abroad, they all seemed to pay a visit and hang proof on their social media pages. The cafe was designed from the inspiration from the K-drama 'W' where the characters travel between reality and a cartoon. I decided to check it out myself to see if it lived up to its hype~

Walk 217m.

When you come to the intersection, make a right and walk straight towards 7/11.

From 7/11, walk 220m straight.

When you come to the three-way junction, make a slight right and keep walking.

You'll get to the big intersection with a cafe with a yellow door. Cross diagonally towards the cafe with the yellow door.

Turn left at the cafe and walk 350m straight.

The cafe's a little bit past Fluffy Coffee and Donuts.

Cafe YND 223-14 | Reviews

This is what Cafe Yeonnamdong 223-14's exterior looks like! We went at noon and people were already lining up outside.

There was an interesting-looking bench outside for customers to sit during their wait.

After lining up outside for about 30 minutes, we were escorted inside. On the left side of the front entrance were rules written on the wall in languages including Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese. Because it was December when we went, the rooftop wasn't open. It will open again in May.

The menu was in Korean and English along with pictures.

The staff behind the counter were busy making delicious drinks.

So... trippy! 

You can see that even at noon the cafe was packed with customers taking photos and enjoying their beverages.

We got a nice window table.

Two drinks and two slices of cake were ordered for the two of us. Even the mugs were cartoon-like!

Green Green Milk : ￦5,500

The presentation! This drink was served with a lid that looked like it was dripping liquid. A lot of people in the cafe took their time taking photos of the drink with the lid on before opening it and trying a sip. The drink itself was basically a matcha latte. It had a nice aroma of matcha and foamed milk on top. It was a nice way to warm up my body after 30 minutes of lining up outside. As a matcha lover, I really enjoyed this drink especially because the taste of the matcha was very rich.

Orange Cafe Latte: ￦6,000

Again, the presentation! It was served up in a nice cartoon-looking mug with a slice of dried orange on top. When I picked it up, I could smell the citrus scent right away which gave me a warm sense of comfort. When I took a sip, I instantly regretted my own curiosity. The flavour of coffee mixed with an orange was quite peculiar. Maybe it is an acquired taste and I can't say my first attempt was delicious.   

Earl Grey Roll (back) & Biscuit Chocolat: ￦7,000 each

I enjoyed the light earl grey flavour of the cake and a generous amount of the soft silky cream rolled in the cake. The sweetness level of the cake was just ideal for me. I recommend this cake to those who prefer cakes that don't have an excessive amount of sugar poured into the batter.

Biscuit Chocolat, as the name tells, was very chocolaty. The slightly sticky texture of the chocolate on top and the layers of soft cake with white cream in between gave it a nice rich flavour. It was stronger and sweeter than the earl grey roll, so a good order of enjoying them would be to go earl grey first and then chocolate next. 🍫

Overall, it was a pretty interesting experience for me. The drinks and desserts were slightly on the pricey side, but given the design premium of its interior, I still felt the prices were reasonable.

If you'd like to take a step outside of the crazy busy area of Hongdae and try something out of the ordinary for a couple of hours, this place is a great option. Just keep in mind that a lot of the times this place has a lineup and the rooftop opens in May. Make sure to bring your camera when you go. 😉📸
