It's simple in theory, chewy rice cakes stir-fried in a spicy and sweet sauce.

It's a dish that's hard to mess up, but there are certain steps you can take to make your Tteokbokki taste more authentic and we're here to share some tips with you, as well as instant versions.

Ingredients

4 cups Rice cakes
4 cups Wheat cakes
4 sheets Korean fish cakes (어묵)
2 cups Cabbage
3 cups Green onions
1 L Water
3 Hard-boiled eggs

Sauce Ingredients

1/3 cup Gochujang (고추장) Korean red pepper paste
1/3 cup Dark soy sauce
1/3 cup Finely ground red pepper power (고춧가루)
1/3 cup Coarsely ground red pepper (고춧가루)
1/3 cup Brown sugar
1/2 Tbsp MSG (optional)

Directions

Step 1: Slice the green onions on a diagonal, slice cabbage and fish cakes into bite-size pieces. 

Rinse the rice and wheat cakes in cold water.

Step 2: Add soy sauce, brown sugar, red pepper paste and powders, cabbage, and green onion, to a pot and bring to a boil.

Step 3: Once sauce is at a boil, add the eggs, rice cakes, and wheat flour cakes. You can also add the MSG now if you choose to use it.

Step 4: Bring back up to a boil and add fish cakes. Let simmer until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
