A palace built by King Seongjong on an expanded scale on the site of ‘Sugang Palace’ built during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. It is said that it was founded in 1483, but was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea, and was rebuilt in 1616, the 8th year of King Gwanghae's reign. It was called 'East Palace' along with Changdeokgung Palace, and it is said that it used the same garden as the back garden. The Japanese used this palace as a zoo and botanical garden, intentionally damaging it and downgrading its status to Changgyeongwon. In 1983, it was restored back to 'Changgyeonggung Palace', and it is said that it is planned to restore many buildings and pavilions that were lost based on the 'Donggwoldo' drawn during the Joseon Dynasty. If you go inside the palace, you will find the 'Great Greenhouse', which is said to be Korea's first Western-style greenhouse built in 1909. There is also 'Chundangji', a large pond in traditional style that is rare in downtown Seoul, and its wonderful scenery is worth admiring. If you want to go to Changdeokgung Palace right next door, you must pay a separate entrance fee. I hope the restoration work begins as soon as possible because many of the buildings in the palace are gone, giving it an empty feel.
